As a promotional offer for upgrading, O2 will give you up to £50 of free pay as you go credit. However you don't need to upgrade to take advantage of this - all you need is a new sim card (and you can get one of those for free - see the bottom of this page). For details see this O2 upgrading page. How it works:
Step 1: Get new sim card.
Step 2: Send an SMS from existing handset with existing SIM Card to 865555 with the Mobile Phone Number that came with your new SIM Card (e.g. 07999 123 456) as the message.
Step 3: O2 will send back a message confirming your upgrade and your free calltime credit amount.
Step 4: The calltime credit will be applied to your calltime balance in 14 days. The new SIM card and new mobile phone number will be disconnected.
Step 5: You can now use your new handset whilst retaining your existing number, calltime balance, Bolt Ons and any numbers stored on your SIM card. Step 6 Once calltime credit has been applied, bin the new SIM Card
You get £5 for every £50 you have topped up since you last upgraded / since you connected (whichever is the most recent). The maximum claim is £50. And it may cause you to lose any discount you'd be entitled to when upgrading your handset in the future. Be sure to read the instructions carefully to make sure that you don't mess up your existing number!
